Eyes closed, Connie sighed for a moment. She was relieved that the food wasn't burnt, and that Luk had listened to her when she told him to take Ever somewhere and wait for Jason to bring a shirt for her to wear. She could hear the two leaving because Ever's cries became quieter. She sighed again, and her heart ached for the child. She knew Jason would prefer to have her stay here, to have her live in the pack house where she would be warm and safe and always surrounded by pack.
But Connie knew the girl probably wouldn't like that. She straightened as she got down some bowls. She got out the silverware and dumped a fork each into the bowls. She filled them, and found a flat pizza pan she used as a tray and went up to where she could hear Jason talking to Everleigh. She wondered what he was saying, and as she quietly approached, she realized Jason was telling Everleigh just what she thought he would. That she needed to stay there, where she would be safe.
Connie waited silently outside the door, not able to see anyone inside. She hadn't walked around the corner yet, and closed her eyes as she leaned into the wall and just listened to Jason's voice. Another thing she had to figure out. Why was Jason making her feel like some idiot teenage girl in high school? Her lips twitched as if to smile. Did she like Jason?
She tilted her head as she pondered this thought, but slowly realized Jason had quit talking. Taking a deep breath, Connie stepped around the corner with the bowls full of food.
"Jason is right," Connie said as she stepped inside. She didn't look at anyone as she set the bowls on a nearby table and started to take them off the pizza pan she used as a tray. Her head was bowed over her task. "The cave isn't safe for you, Everleigh. Especially not in the winter. And with hunters around, they could find the cave and you have no way out." Her hands paused in what they were doing, and formed fists. Her nails cut into her palm, but not quite deep enough to draw blood.
"But instead of staying here, you can come stay with me." Finally, she turned, two bowls of steaming pot-roast in her hands as she smiled at the group sitting near or on the bed. "It would just be the two of us. Like a big sleep-over with a lot of food and a really big screen t.v. where you could watch whatever you wanted. And you'd still have a warm, fluffy feather bed to sleep in like you would here, but you wouldn't have to worry about a pack wolf barging in at random hours of the day and waking you up." Gently, she moved over to them, holding out a bowl to Luk and the other towards Everleigh. She ignored Jason on the floor for the moment. She'd give him his food after Ever and Luk took theirs if he didn't get up and get it before she could.
"I also have a nice back yard, and it stretches out into the forest. We can go running whenever the full moon is out, and I could start to teach you to control your wolf so you don't have to turn every full moon. I wouldn't recommend it, it's really uncomfortable, but it can be useful." Connie gave another soft smile as she watched the child with her head in Luk's lap crying softly. "We can't let you stay in the cave Ever... I know you thought of it as your home, but you aren't safe there. But you have choices now. You can stay in the pack house, here with Jason, or you can come home with me where you'd still be warm and safe, but with less people. And if it would make you feel better, you can have anyone you want come over. Luk could come see you whenever you wanted."

Everleigh couldn't have been more grateful to get the hell out of that living room! It was the central hub of the home, after all, and with Jason and Connie coming in and out...well, she was overwhelmed. Her thin arms wrapped around Luk, her face still hidden against him, as he carried her to the nearest bedroom. Gently, he placed the sobbing child down on the bed and stayed close by, still trying to ease the girl's grief and fear. He wouldn't let anything happen to her. He would protect her and not allow Jason's command to alter her life as greatly as she was fearing that it would. And now the little girl couldn't help but to wonder why. Why did this boy care so much about her situation? Why was he getting so emotional over the alpha's decision? How was it that the tiny child could affect this stranger in this way? In spite of his best efforts, Everleigh had noticed that the boy was crying right along with her. She just didn't understand why.
To allow him to save face, she let him guide her head down to rest in his lap. If he didn't want to share his pain with her then it was no business of hers to push the issue. It might be the only thing she could do to care for him as he was trying to care for her. Still, her curiosity was piqued. And just as she had gathered her courage to open her mouth and voice the question, Jason made his appearance into the room, clothes for her in his hand. Crap. Her mouth shut with an audible snap and she couldn't help following his every move with her bright blue eyes.
The alpha lowered himself slowly to her level. He didn't force her to lift her head to talk to him. Apparently, her emotional state was much more of a concern to him than his alpha status. Just having that much dawn on her helped her to keep in mind that this man, though he was the ultimate authority for her now, was also a good, kind person. And as he talked, his words helped to solidify that image for the little girl. Somewhere inside she knew he wasn't trying to be cruel. Everleigh wasn't oblivious to the truth of her situation. She was small. She was young. She was alone. She was defenseless, outside of the full moon. Joining the pack made total sense. It was the fact that she hadn't had the choice. It was that it had been brought down on her so suddenly. She was being forced into it. She wanted to get to know more of the pack on her own. She had wanted to build friendships and bonds and then dive into a decision like this. Trust was hard won with the girl. It wasn't something she could afford to just give away. If all the scars on her tiny body were any reminder of all those times she'd let her guard down around the wrong sort....she couldn't allow it to happen again, especially not with her own kind.
But Jason was telling her that she wouldn't be confined to the house. She could still wander and play and explore. It was just that she would have to be back at the house before dark. Simple, right? But after living alone in that cave for over a year, being so independent for so long, could she really force herself to follow even two simple rules? Of course, Everleigh's whole personality was submissive. She was the kind of child to follow an order simply because it came from an adult. The little one was nothing if not obedient. Somewhere, deep down, she knew she would have no problem obeying Jason but with so many people around, bringing herself back to this environment night after night...it would be tough.
And then Connie entered with the food and proposed a new option. Just her and Connie, living alone in a nice home with a big backyard and no other wolves coming and going. Just the two of them. The little girl's eyes lit up. Slowly, her head lifted from Luk's lap and her eyes silently roamed from Jason to Luk, deferring to the two of them, silently asking permission. Can I?!

Lukan continued to stroke the distraught child's hair, rub her back, and murmur words of comfort; he never lied though. How could he further increase his debt to Ever by lying? He knew what it was like to be deceived, he knew it all too well. Sure you can be a knight when you get older. Complete bullshit, kindergarten teacher! Don't worry kid, we'll get everything under control. Another lie courtesy of the police! You're like a son to me. Lies, Amaguk! Now, how could he ever wish that gut wrenching pain onto Ever? Nay, how could he wish it onto anyone, save those who dealt him such pain before? He couldn't. So rather than entice her ears with stories of gumdrops and sugar, he told her the truth and made promises that he planned to keep.
"I want to keep you safe. I really want to. So... so I'm gonna try. Okay? I swe-" His voice, once lulling and soft, suddenly fell victim to an imaginary butcher knife; it cut his words off. Lukan's eyes, humanly blue yet serious, dug into the alpha blocking the doorway. I'm warning you, his watery glare said. He stared and stared, not even pausing to wipe the tears away. But he didn't growl this time. He was simply present... like a threat looming above them all; hurt this girl and I hurt you, badly. Luk refrained from acting out on this threat until Jason touched Ever. The very second J's hand touched the girl's head, Lukan reached up to shove him hard with a snarl, all the while remaining on the bed's edge. "No." It was all that needed to be said. But as if the message wasn't clear, Luk proceeded to rest an arm against Ever's side, not clinging, but claiming.
He kept his arm on the girl and eyes locked with Jason as the alpha talked. But, he was still letting him speak. And as the alpha continued on, Lukan's gaze grew softer... and his face, paler. J spoke of such an enticing utopia (which Connie added on to), that even Luk felt... convinced? But most of all, the teen was stricken by worry and paranoia. Towards the very beginning of his life as a packwolf, Lukan assured himself that it was only temporary. He'd learn to hunt and run away with Dave to God knows where; that was his paradise and his dream. Then Jason described such... perfection, and Lukan couldn't find a single lie in his entire speech. He was safe. He was well fed. He had a confidant in Jason. There... had to be something wrong, though. Luk began to squirm uncomfortably on the edge of the bed, gripping the covers until his knuckles turned white. There had to be a flaw.
Oh there was a flaw, but with Luk's plan, not packlife. Not only had he not seen Dave for awhile, but Luk was no better at hunting than he was a few months ago. He wasn't any closer to his dream. And worse (at least Luk viewed it as a negative), this new life was turning into a paradise on its own. There was one flaw: they might leave him like so many had before. He might be rejected. But that excuse... Lukan could feel it growing dry on his tongue. He was also hearing a new voice, and it became more enticing every time it spoke; you want the love you deny yourself. Just give in, it screamed at him! The stubborn teen could feel himself bending (for once) and it terrified him. He didn't like change. Most children didn't.
With every glance Jason gave him, teasing or pleasant, Lukan felt himself grow ashen. In all his distress, it was needless to say that Lukan ignored Connie's offer for food. He didn't really... feel like eating. At all. Lukan proceeded to tense and squirm, then eventually he let his arm slip away from Ever's side. Luk probably should have kept up his comforting. He should have stroked her hair and made more promises, but his mind had once more launched itself into turmoil. The teen couldn't focus on anything else but his own inner dilemma. It was only Luk's concern for the girl that preventing him from voicing his own problems, but he still cried. He raised both hands up to cover his face and stayed quiet.

It was after he was done speaking that the scent of the food hit him. With a bit of a smirk on his face, Jason didn't immediately turn to Connie when she entered the room. He knew she had been standing just outside the door and assumed she was listening in. It didn't bother him, though. He was just amused.
Connie was busying herself with handing out bowls to the children so she probably wouldn't have seen Jason's face fall into a frown at her proposal to Everleigh. It wasn't that he didn't agree. Obviously, having the timid little girl in a less chaotic environment would be better for her but the timing of her speech was poor. He would have much preferred to have talked to Connie about something like that where it was just the two of them, away from the children, until plans were more solid. In his mind, he had been planning to work with the child, slowly building a trust between the two. Being that Jason was now going to be so prominent in the girl's life, he wanted a bond to form so she would trust his judgement, not just blindly follow his orders.
Taking a deep breath as he slowly got to his feet, Jason planted a light smile on his face, and took both bowls when neither child reached for them, setting them down on the bureau nearby. He'd make sure they ate, especially the rail-thin little girl, but right now he had more important things to take care of. Picking Everleigh up for a moment, the big man placed her on his lap as he sat himself down next to Luk and wrapped one of his long arms around the boy. He could fidget and protest all he wanted. Jason was going to make him hug this one out. There would be no more ignoring the boy's emotions and allowing the kid to "save face." He was clearly falling apart and J wouldn't stand for it. He refused to just sit by and watch.
Now, with both children around him, his eyes roamed to Everleigh's eager face and he chuckled lightly. "Connie and I will talk about details and then we'll all figure it out, ok?" It wasn't a solid yes but it wasn't anywhere near a no. There were just ideas that he wanted to run by Connie and he wanted both adults on the same page. He gave the little blonde a light smile, stroking her hair back away from her face as she settled against him then his attention went to Luk. He leaned forward, resting his chin on the boy's head and whispered. "Everything I told Everleigh applies to you, as well. You know that, don't you?" His eyes flickered to Connie and only she could see the deep sadness there. This poor boy. It broke his heart.

When neither of the children took the proffered bowls, Connie felt something in her sink a bit. Sadness welled inside her as she saw Luk's face, just as crestfallen as Everleigh's. She wanted nothing more than to put the bowls down and cradle both children in her arms, but knew Luk at least would turn violent at the touch. Instead, she turned to Jason as he gently took the bowls from her, and saw a brief frown on his face before he turned it into a smile. Inside, she winced. She knew she should have talked over her idea with Jason first, but seeing Ever so miserable there had cost her her tongue. She had just burst out with the idea without even thinking about it.
Sending Jason a look at tried to convey her apology without speaking, she turned and moved back to the food. She grabbed one of the last two bowls and held it out to Jason, giving him a faint, hesitant smile. The smile faded, though, as he looked at her while speaking to Luk. The sorrow that she saw in his eyes wrenched her as much as the children on the bed. She blinked, fast, hiding her tears from him and the children. No one needed her to start blubbering right then.
Gently, Connie set down the bowl of food and reached out, touching Jason's cheek as it was resting on top of Luk's head. Her eyes showed her own sorry, but her tears were now hidden deep.
Just as she drew her hand away, she felt something inside her seem to awaken. Jolting backwards, she pressed a hand to the wall, pressing her free hand to her head. Her wolf! Her wolf was back!
Raising her head, she looked at Jason with wolf-bright eyes that seemed to glow golden in the faint light of the bedroom. "The moon is coming back," She said, heart racing as she tried to calm herself again. Her wolf was nearly as frantic as she had been earlier, panicking because she hadn't been able to talk to Connie.
Soon, love. Soon... I need to stay human for just a little while longer, She whispered in her head to her wolf, eyes closed. The wolf wasn't fully back yet, not quite yet. But in another fifteen minutes, she was sure her and Jason would have two scared, sad wolves to deal with, and to do that she couldn't be a wolf herself. Sucking in a deep breath, she opened her eyes again. They were their usual brown now, though golden highlights seemed to streak through them.
"Come on, guys," She said gently to Ever and Luk. "Sit up now, you need to eat. It will help, I promise."

Luk just pushed the Alpha away. Pushed the alpha! Now the tiny child was waiting for the shit to hit the fan. The boy's arm came around to slowly and possessively hold her. Clearly, Luk was telling the alpha that she was his responsibility. But the little girl couldn't help but hold her breath. Jason just seemed to let it go and focus on her and she relaxed a bit, trying to focus on this words.
What Jason had to say did sound nice and it definitely would be preferable to the conditions that she had been in. If she were being honest with herself, it wasn't the cave that Everleigh wanted to go back to. It was the life that she had. She wanted the sense of security she had when she had no one to answer to. She wanted the freedom of wandering when she felt like it and not worry about checking in with anyone. What kid wouldn't want that? But Jason's other concerns made sense and overpowered her reasoning for remaining alone. She wasn't dumb. She was just very timid.
It wasn't until Luk's arm fell away and she could feel him tense and then crumble beside her that her attention went to him again. Before she could react, Jason had gathered her up and placed her in his lap. Obviously, that startled her but his light, reassuring smile made her relax and she rested her head against his chest. Her eyes flickered back to Luk, concern and worry filling them as he sobbed. She was glad that Jason was holding the boy. He obviously could use the comfort more than she could right now.
Jason hadn't missed her questioning gaze but his answer wasn't exactly what she had been hoping to hear. Still, it wasn't a hard, firm no either. It was a yes but with conditions. Those conditions made her stomach twist a bit but she'd try to worry about that later. Her attention was just shifting back to Luk when, out of the corner of her eye, she saw Connie almost double over. With a gasp, the child wiggled to the edge of Jason's lap but he had an arm firmly around her too. She could only sit and watch as Connie lifted her bright, wolfy eyes and proclaimed that moon was coming back. Panicked, Everleigh lifted her bright blue, scared eyes to Jason. She didn't want to shift into wolf form as quickly as she had been forced to become human. That pain had been torture.
When her eyes found the alpha's face, though, he looked very deeply sad. She just couldn't bring herself to add any more concerns onto the nice man's shoulders. With a deep breath, Everleigh silently nodded at Connie's command and took her bowl from the bureau, silently forcing herself to eat.

As Jason moved closer, the pale-faced boy let out an apprehensive growl. "N-no..." He protested weakly, but that was all; nothing more than words. Perhaps he didn't know how else to react. It felt... instinctual to reject comfort, but that was changing for the better. A few months ago, Lukan may have very well tried to claw Jason's eyes and throat out. He might have kicked and screamed until the alpha, or anyone else for that matter, finally relented in their attempts to help the boy. But now, he barely let out a whine as the alpha moved Ever from his lap and wrapped an arm around the kid's shoulders. Luk, at this point, was more likely to break into sobs rather than lash out.
His body stiffened as the alpha spoke to Ever. He stared numbly at the wall, and then the ceiling; he was not here and this was not happening. Luk's mind was at war. Shove him away and scream! Give into the love you deserve! DO IT! Lukan barely blinked in response, for he was afraid any movement or sound on his part would release the floodgates of emotion. It was bad enough that he was crying, but things could be much worse. Much. Worse.
And then, Jason spoke to him. In one very brief moment, Lukan showed favor to one army battling in his mind. "Yes," he croaked, "I know." The tension in Luk's body suddenly slackened with one guttural sob. He refused to meet Jason's eyes or even lean against the other, but he spoke again. "I hate it... I hate change." Lukan refused to elaborate and suddenly stood up, rocking unsteadily on his feet for a few seconds. He then bolted from the room with both arms wrapped around his stomach. Connie's discovery, along with her offer of food, was ignored.
Luk proceeded to fall onto the couch with another cry of panic. His hands moved steadily from his stomach to his heart, as if to shield it from the world's evils. It was then that he found another stirring in his chest: his wolf. It was alive... and it wanted out. With little control for even his own emotions, Luk couldn't fight the wolf inside him any longer; the beast came out with a terrible howl. But rather than launch into a traditional new-wolf fit, Lukan scrambled behind the couch and curled up. Tail over nose. He wanted to sleep through the battle between instinct and desire.

Connie's gentle touch against his cheek brought a light smile back to his face. He knew she didn't mean to step on his toes and that she obviously didn't know of his plans. It wasn't a big deal and they could definitely talk more later, just like he told Everleigh that they would. He was just about to speak when she suddenly jolted and her eyes flashed yellow. His arms tightened around both children, instinctively, as he watched Connie. She didn't fully shift though and seemed to have control. Taking a deep breath, only relaxing when Connie's eyes were their usual brown, Jason once again focused on the kids.
Connie was right, they needed to eat before the shift. With this eclipse, he had no idea how either of them would react. Everleigh had her food, though she was quiet and seemed to be holding something back. J was about to ask when Luk suddenly stood and bolted from the room. Placing the small girl gently on the bed, careful not to disturb her bowl of hot food in her hands, Jason got to his feet as well. His wolf was back, too but, being as old as J was, controlling the beast, even after an event like an eclipse, wasn't too difficult. Now that his heightened senses were back, he could hear Luk downstairs. That howl obviously told the man that the boy had shifted but when he heard no other sounds, he frowned.
His eyes moved to Connie as he walked over to her. He couldn't help wrapping an arm around her for a moment. "Are you alright here with Everleigh?" He had to know, obviously, for the safety of the girl but then he also was just plain worried. Only when he was sure that both girls were covered did Jason finally leave the room to check on the pup downstairs.
But Luk was sleeping behind the sofa. No drama there and he was relieved. Slowly, he ascended the stairs again, deciding to stay with the other two wolves to make sure they would be ok through this, as well.

Connie watched the trio on the bed, eyes sad as she kept her distance. She didn't know Luk very well, and didn't think he'd like it if she went over to cuddle him the way Jason was. Still, when he jumped up and bolted out of the room, she found herself taking a small step after him, but stopped. She turned back to the bed, eyes still sad as she watched Jason move to stand.
"I'm fine," She said when Jason asked if she could watch Everleigh. "Go. Get Luk." After her words, a howl sounded downstairs, and she winced a little as she moved to sit next to Ever on the bed. Her wolf was all but prowling in her head, wanting to be let loose but knowing she couldn't because she needed to be there for Ever.
Connie reached out, and placed a hand gently on Ever's head, stroking the girls soft blond hair. She gently put her arm around her shoulders and watched as Ever slowly ate the pot roast. Connie wasn't sure what to say, and sighed softly as she rested her head on top of the girl's. "This whole eclipse business sucks, huh?" Connie said. She leaned back and looked down at Ever. She couldn't tell if Ever was enjoying her meal, or was just eating because Connie told her she should. "Don't you like the pot roast?" She asked, curiously picking up a bowl and taking a bite. It tasted okay to her. She shrugged, shoving another big bite into her mouth. "Tasty."

Everleigh really wanted to go after Luk but found herself placed gently on the bed as Jason went after him instead. Since she hadn't had the chance to ask Jason if she could come before he left, she just sat there, looking from the doorway that J had just disappeared out of and then to Connie. Worry was plain on her face but it was obvious in Connie's face, too. Luk's howl was loud but then was followed by silence. Ever really hoped that wasn't a bad sign.
Connie came to her then, sitting beside her and holding her close. The little girl leaned into the motherly woman and she still picked at her food. It really was tasty and the child's bright blue eyes wander to glance up at Connie with a nod. "Yeah, I like it." There was just so much going on and so much on her mind that she kind of felt like she was going through the motions, shoveling the food in and chewing.
It surprised her when Jason appeared back in the doorway so quickly. Luk must have been ok for J to leave him alone and come back up. The alpha seemed a bit less distressed than before but still clearly worried. He came back over to the two girls and sat quietly with them, silently eating his meal too. His sentiments were the same as Everleigh's. Connie really was a good cook.
Fortunately, for the child, her own wolf came back after she had a chance to finish her food and had barely managed to place her bowl on the bureau. Her shift was quick, painful and sudden. After everything that she's been through tonight the little white pup couldn't take anymore stress and just slid herself off the bed to burrow herself underneath it instead. And that was where the child spent the night.
