Becca hummed to herself as slowly maneuvered her way down the snow packed trail running along the property line, Duncan’s padded hooves crunching the light snow as they moved. It felt like forever since she’d been out for a ride, when she had been home just a month ago for Christmas. Classes had just started again at the university but the young woman already found herself crawling home for a weekend to get away from the girls she shared a dorm with. She knew girls could be catty and annoying but holy crap did the ones that moved from outside the area have a lot to learn about local country life. She shook her head with a sigh. At least she could escape it.
And with the clouds on the horizon, she may be escaping for a little longer than she originally planned, but for now, she would enjoy the warm winter air and the bright sunshine. Coming to a stop she patted Duncan on the neck and took a deep breath in. Mmm, Converse air. Fresh, clean (when the wind was blowing away from the mill), this is what she came home to. One of the only things that made her stick close while she was out of town for school. Freedom found in a strange place. The other was her friends, though most she had fallen out of contact with after graduation. Becca had been so intent on leaving Converse and its history, her history, behind she thought it would be best to cut ties as soon as possible so she did. Now she kind of regretted it. She missed her friends, her life…
A small scowl crossed her face as she changed the song on her iPod. Country was all well and good but some of the songs just were not helping her mood. Flicking through the playlist, she found a more up-beat song and settled herself again. To her left, the sound of a truck rattled down the road, to her right, the wide open field that plays host to her families horses during the summer but was currently playing host to… snow. And a lot of it by the looks of it, it was nice to see her dad (or younger brother) was keeping a trail blazed along the fence. “What do ya think Duncan, home time?”

Five hours of deep fryers, processed hamburger patties, and something that was supposed to taste like cheese and he was finally free. He rolled his truck windows down, letting the bite of the cold air into the cab. It wasn't all that cold for him, anyway, and he liked being able to smell the air around him. Having the windows rolled up always made him feel somehow suffocated. His fingers drummed out a beat on the steering wheel even as he turned a corner, though the radio was off. Stupid thing had quit working a couple weeks ago. Probably a short in the wiring, but he was too lazy to look.
The sun was out, and even though there was snow on the ground, it was a nice day. Light breeze, fresh air... until he smelled the horses. Well, it was semi-fresh air anyway. To his nose, the breeze was always tinted with the scents of people, car exhaust, dogs, someone's perfume... the list went on and on. Cayden looked out the window at Becca's family farm which resembled a blanket of snow dotted with horses, a couple barns, and the house that he used to stalk past in his free time.
He kinda missed her. She'd gone off to college away from this little town and he didn't blame her one bit. Not that he'd ever leave, but she was meant for more than to just be a hunter's daughter from Converse, South Dakota. Still, part of him had wondered if she'd left because of him; because of what he'd done to her. He kicked himself for that dumbass move quite a few times. Once even literally but that hadn't worked out so well. All he'd done was bruise his shin and trip himself. Now Kelly was gone anyway and nobody knew if she was even alive. Maya was gone looking for her brother. Becca was gone off to college.
Cayden caught a flash of red out of the corner of his eye and he turned his head to look. Red hair... on a horse. That couldn't be Becca, could it? He stopped the truck on the side of the road next to the fence that circled nearly the entire property. Sniffing at the air didn't help him much since the wind was going the wrong direction. He sniffed anyway as he squinted and finally made out Becca's small form on horseback. He grinned, but the grin quickly slid off his face when he thought about her last words to him. Something about never seeing him again or she'd kill him. That was after she'd burned his face with a silver bracelet. Yeah, even if he was happy to see her, she probably hated his guts (with good reason). He should go. He watched a moment longer, then quietly slid back into the truck and shut the door. |

Becca was enjoying the silence that came with being in the fields broken only by the music streaming from her ear buds and the occasional rumbling engine that rambled down the road. She was getting ready to head back towards the house when Duncan shifted under her in an uneasy sort of manner. Patting his neck, she spoke in a soothing voice as she glanced around to see if she could spot the source of the horses’ unease. Couldn’t be anything from the forest, it was on the far side of the field and it wasn’t common for Duncan to spook at the sound of an engine. That’s when her eyes spotted it, parked along the side of the road. A very familiar looking truck was stopped and she saw a figure climb into it. It couldn’t be, could it?
For a long moment, Becca just stared at the truck unsure of what to do. Did she go see if it was really Cayden or should she just pretend that she didn’t see him? No, that wouldn’t be right. She missed him as a friend, and she could use a real friend again since they seemed to be far and few between at the university. Nudging Duncan forward she urged him gingerly towards the access gate that led directly on to the property from the road. Hopping off for a moment, she unlocked the chain and swung it open before leading the horse through and locking the gate again. Seemed like they’d be taking the long way back to the house. On solid and non-slippery ground, Becca remounted and headed back towards the house, and the truck.
Maybe she was wrong, maybe it wasn’t Cayden but someone who had a similar truck. She doubted that possibility but she had to see for sure. A little more sure footed than on the packed trail, the horse moved down the pavement and Becca found herself holding her breath the closer she got to the vehicle.

He could tell exactly when the horse caught wind of him. Prey animals usually had that reaction unless they were used to being around werewolves. Some of them were, but not many. He'd actually had a horse when he was younger, but his dad has made him get rid of it once Carter shifted for the first time. Cayden thought Henry was just afraid his kids would eat it. Honestly, in those early months after shifting, he might have. He still missed the horse, though. It had been a long time since he'd ridden.
Becca had caught sight of him now and Cayden toyed with the idea of leaving. He hadn't even really intended to stop in the first place. Things were sure to be awkward between them. Okay, perhaps awkward was an understatement. The last time he'd seen her, she threatened to kill him. Not that he hadn't deserved it. Surely she wouldn't still hate him though, would she? There was no way to know unless he actually talked to her.
Cayden continued to argue with himself, all the while still watching Becca as she drew closer. Making up his mind, he got out of the truck but left the keys in the ignition. He knew for a fact that she owned a silver bracelet at the least and he also knew she wasn't afraid to fling it at his face in a pinch. With a sigh, he leaned against the white truck's fender and crossed his arms over his chest. It was cold outside and he wasn't wearing anything over his t-shirt, but that didn't matter with Becca. She knew. Still, he hoped that her dad wasn't looking out a window right now. He knew that son of a bitch had at least one sniper rifle. Cayden forced himself to remain calm as Becca drew even closer. "Please don't kill me?" He had a half grin on his face, hoping she'd at least partially forgiven him. |

No one could deny the fact that Cayden had done some stupid things when they were together and Becca hadn't been much better. She knew the risks of their relationship after she found out about him but she hadn't taken them as seriously as she probably should have. She also used that knowledge against him to a degree when she threw a silver bracelet at his face when he tried apologizing for everything. Yup, that had been a long day. Habitually, she gave her wrist a shake but the sound of clinking metals fell on deaf ears as she'd left her jewelry at home. Too cold to wear too much metal.
A small smile spread across her face as she watched Cayden lean against his truck the closer she got and tried to hide it. She wanted to see how badly she could scare him by attempting to look serious, though she could feel it failing as she stopped Duncan beside Cadyen. The horse shifted uneasily but Becca managed to keep him under control and from dancing too far away. "Kill you? And lose one of the more entertaining members of the community. Hmm, nah. Need some entertainment to come back to." Okay so the serious look failed as she gave him a fairly warm smile. Not that she could even if she wanted too. Other than lacking silver, she also lacked any real weapon or tool to use against a werewolf. "How ya doing Cay?"

He eyed it back and it shifted nervously. It shouldn't have brought him any satisfaction to intimidate a silly prey animal, but it did. Still, he didn't want the horse to toss Becca to the ground. He shifted his weight slightly into a less threatening pose and the horse quieted. A little. Silly animal. He turned his attention to the horse's rider, noticing that look on her face that she got when she was trying to be serious and failing miserably. A smile tugged at the corners of his mouth, but he stamped it down. At least she thought he was entertaining. His smile broke about when hers did, but his was more of an embarrassed smile. He knew he'd screwed up and done so brilliantly. He didn't know if it was possible for him to screw things up worse. "Just checking. I seem to recall death threats the last time we spoke." It was so strange to talk to her, knowing that she knew about him. He'd known her since they were kids, and now she knew.
Cayden didn't push himself away from the truck's fender, but he held out his hand for the horse to sniff. He used to ride when he was younger, but he hadn't been on a horse since he'd shifted for the first time. They didn't trust him. They instinctively knew he was a natural predator. A hunter. A killer. He idly wondered if they knew he was a cheater, too. Probably. Silly animals seemed to know more than they let on. "I've been better but I'm getting by." There'd been so much going on lately that he was lucky he knew what his own name was. "Let's see... you missed a lunar eclipse which wasn't fun. I moved out and have a place with Carter now, so I don't see much of my dad anymore. That bastard is better to avoid anyway. Going to college in Russiaville which isn't a bad drive. Still working at the diner like a loser." He shot her a half grin at the self-depreciation, somehow hoping that if he made fun of himself, she'd do it less. No need to make fun of me. I've got it covered.
Finally pushing himself away from the truck, Cayden took a couple steps toward her, doing his best not to make her horse flip out. "Look, I know it's a little late and not enough to make up for everything... but I'm sorry. I've done a lot of dumbass things in my life but what I did to you takes the cake. Easily. I don't expect you to forgive me, but I still had to apologize." He figured that was the real reason he hadn't just kept driving when he'd seen her. He just hadn't realized it until that moment. He'd needed to apologize, because despite everything that had happened between them and the worst break-up of his life... he missed her. He missed her as a friend and if he was being completely honest with himself, he missed her as his girlfriend, too. Not that she'd want him back. He'd screwed up too badly for that. |

my head is spinning, so blow me one last kiss [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-image: url(http://i758.photobucket.com/albums/xx223/ka7raelizabeth/3346431062_dc458bf3d0-1.jpg); width: 388px; padding-top: 20px; padding-bottom: 20px;]
Rebbecca's cheeks turned a light pink when Cayden brought up the former death threat she'd held against him. After all the years she'd known him, he was one of the last people she would have thought she could threat with silver or merely ratting him out to the hunter community which her dad had an increasingly growing hand in. It still amazed her sometimes to think about it and think of Cayden as anything more than... well Cayden. A silly human boy who was actually not human. "Yeah... I don't think I'd be a very good hunter. I have a hard enough time with the rabbits." She smiled a little, alluding to the idea of killing him and how well it would probably work.
Duncan danced under her as Cayden's hand came out for him to sniff. Patting his neck Becca eased him enough to slide out of the saddle so the animal could put some distance between himself and the creature he knew Cayden could be. She listened to him fill her in a bit, relief and a smile on her face hearing about his accomplishments as of late. "I'm proud of you." And she meant it. "Glad to hear you're moved in with Carter and out from under your dad. What are you taking at the college?" See, she knew he was a smart cookie... at times. She snorted when he said he was still working at the diner like a loser. "No no. Loser is Hance. You at least have a steady job." she nodded matter of factly.
When Cayden finally approached her and Duncan, who was standing just a little behind her, she heard the horse snort and smiled a bit. Well at least he wasn't taking off but after smelling Cayden on her for years, she shouldn't be so surprised he was sort of behaving. The sudden rush of words and apologies flooding out of her ex-boyfriends mouth were like a wall hitting her. Taking a half step back, she blinked at him as everything he'd said sunk in. It was true, he'd been a pretty big dumbass when they were together, hell it had threatened their entire childhood based friendship until she had gone off to the university and given herself some time to really think things through. They hadn't never been meant to be together in a romantic sense, she had decided that but that didn't mean she had to lose one of her closest friends. Letting him sweat for a moment as she picked her words carefully, a small, warm smile started to spread across her face. "You're right." She paused. "A lot of people wouldn't even consider accepting an apology, or at least anything more than that." Suspensful! "But... We've been friends for far too long to let things end the way they did." Her voice was soft as she spoke, "I accept your apologize Cayden and... I want to be friends again. Like we used to be."

[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, width: 400px; background-color: #343434; padding:20px; border-top: 10px #335588 solid; border-bottom: 10px #335588 solid;] repair your broken wings ( WORDS ) 435 ( TAGGED ) becca ( WOLF FORM ) CLICKY Cayden watched Becca blush. It didn't exactly match her hair, but it still amused him. "Rabbits aren't that bad. Go out and kill a deer, then we'll talk." He was certain she'd make a good hunter if she had a reason, though. It was one of the things that made him take her threat seriously. He'd watched friends, family, and loved ones die at the hands of hunters, most of which had little or no motivation beyond ignorant hatred. Cayden had given Becca a much better reason to take his life. He'd hurt her, and he wasn't human so death was justified. At least, most humans thought that way. He should have remembered that Becca wasn't like most humans.
Cayden didn't bother to hide a grin when she said she was proud of him. It wasn't a phrase he heard very often even if she didn't mean it, so he took it to heart. It was a nice thing to hear. "You're looking at a guy with an undecided major, so don't count me out of the Hance category just yet. I could still be that much of a loser." And he wasn't doing that great in his classes, anyway. He did better if he had a goal and it seemed like he was taking classes just to take classes at the moment. The sad thing was, he just didn't know what he wanted to do with his life. There was too much going on, too much drama. He might not even live to turn in homework next week. Then again, that was normal. Stupid hunters.
Once Cayden apologized, he almost wanted to take it back. Becca actually took a step away from him and he didn't know if it was because of the apology or if she was having a similar reaction to him as the horse. He wondered if she was afraid of him, and he took a step back to give her space. The moments ticked by with none of them moving. Even the silly horse was standing quietly. Cayden swallowed reflexively. Then Becca started to grin. He gave her a glare that hid the way his lips wanted to twitch into a smile. "That's not funny." Alright, so it had been just a little amusing. Slightly. In Becca's twisted mind. He shook his head with a soft snort, but gave her a serious glance a moment later. "You sure about that? I told you I was a loser. You should really pick better friends..." At that, the grin blossomed into a full-blown smile. |
