Just a little too late Your words still serenade me
YAY NOTES HERE
Mercedes walked slowly through the park, getting the feel of the town. She had only been here for a day, having gotten in yesterday afternoon and falling asleep as soon as she had gotten to the apartment the FBI had rented her for her stay in Converse. She would have been fine with a hotel room, but so far she hadn't even found a hotel in the small town. It didn't matter, she was comfortable in the small apartment, though she ached to tuck her daughter into bed. She missed Jasmine and her husband Inigo every time she had to go out on assignment.
Her lips turned up into a smile as she remembered the phone call last night before Jasmine went to bed. Her daughter had gone on and on about how she had gotten an A+ on her spelling assignment, and wanted her to tell daddy that it was okay if she stayed up late to watch a movie. Mercy laughed a little. It was a Friday, so Mercy had told Inigo it would be okay if Mercy stayed up. The two hung up shortly after, wishing they could be where the other was.
She sighed again, but was happier than she had been a moment before. Thinking of Jasmine had that effect on her.
She looked up when she heard footsteps, and paused. So far the park had been deserted, though she wasn't worried. Now would be as good a time as any to get some questions answered by some of the locals. Hopefully whoever it was was open to questions. She hated dealing with the stubborn ones...

Jason's world was now in chaos. This whole thing with strangers descending on the town, exposing the wolves, his wolves to the world and the government's involvement...it was like being in a nightmare he couldn't wake up from. Keeping everyone together and safe had been hard enough before but now...now, it felt damn near impossible. And it was killing him. The alpha's entire world was this pack, this place. Everything now felt like it was tumbling down around him and he couldn't do anything to stop it, only try to control it as much as possible.
Small towns had always given J a sense of comfort. There was something in the slow pace and small population that helped to protect him and everyone like him. His parents had raised him in a very small but tight human community. Jason knew how to "play the game." He knew how to blend in and not raise suspicions. Hopefully, now he could teach that to the others. Their lives would depend on it.
Part of protecting everyone now became patrolling to the point of near exhaustion, constantly roaming and trying to keep on top of who was in town, who was new, why they were here...Jason was a friendly guy. Talking to people, even humans, wasn't something he wasn't used to but now, now that skill just might save their lives. At least he hoped so. So, while the government was doing their investigations, J was doing his. He would ask his own questions, feel out all possible threats and do what he needed to do to protect his family.
Even though it was late afternoon, J had already been down this way twice that day but he felt compelled to wander here, at least one more time...probably more given that it was only about four. He would certainly be back when the sun went down. The park was a spot that seemed to attract humans more than werewolves so it was one of the places that J wanted to keep an eye on. And sure enough, as he got closer, he picked up the scent of a human. Coming around the corner, having taken the sidewalk instead of the woods so he wouldn't look as suspicious, the man found a woman hanging out on a bench. Definitely not a face he's seen before or a scent he's come across any other time. She seemed to be a newcomer and that meant J needed to talk to her.
Pasting a small, friendly smile on his face, he tucked his hands in the pockets of his jeans and wandered a bit closer. "Finally, we're getting some warmer weather." And he looked up at the blue sky with a good-natured shrug. "I thought for a while there we'd be getting so much snow we'd all get buried.' And he chuckled a bit, just trying to come across as a friendly, small town guy.

Mercedes looked up as the man approached her. She was a little startled at first. Who wouldn't have been? Her first impression of him was that he was huge. He was tall and very muscular. But when he started speaking, she relaxed, though she hadn't even realized she'd tensed in the first place. He sounded nice, and now that she looked closer, she could see he looked nice as well, not just sounded it.
"Aye, I was told there would be a lot of snow here. But I hadn't expected it to be this deep." Her voice, though still accented with her homeland of Mexico, was clearly exasperated. "I have problems just walking!" She shrugged and sighed, then smiled warmly at the man.
"I'm Mercedes, by the way. Mercedes Silva. Most people call me Mercy though." After a moment of thought, she pulled out her badge. "Special Agent Mercedes Silva. Mind if I ask you a question or two? It's nothing serious. I'm just curious about the town."
