With the moon shrinking and the afternoon off, Jess was feeling more like herself than she had in a while. As such, a trip to the pack house seemed in order. Happily her son, Aiden, sat at the kitchen table coloring on some blank sheets of paper. Meanwhile Jess seemed to have the place to herself, or if anyone was there they were locked in a room doing who knows what. For now she was happy to enjoy the peace and quiet though, watching Aiden while she mixed some chocolate chip cookie dough, cup of coffee resting next to her on the counter.

Patrols were done until the final one this evening and J was just heading home. The pack house had been quiet today so he had taken his time, leisurely pacing the borders of their territory. He even took his time heading back. He wasn't expecting much activity at the house today so he was pleasantly surprised to catch the strong scent of coffee coming from the property as he approached. A smile touched his face. That could only mean one thing. Jess was visiting.
J climbed the back porch and that was when he heard the sound of the happy little boy. Aiden was visiting as well. His smile grew as he opened the door and wiped his boots. "Hi Jess." And he closed the door behind him before turning to the little boy at the table. "And hi there, Aiden. What have you got there?" He stood next to the table for a moment, watching the child attempt to use the crayons on the paper in front of him.

Jess heard Jason before she saw him, and she only glanced over briefly at the alpha's entrance before settling her eyes back on her son. "Afternoon, sir." Her voice was soft, respectful, and quite frankly, uncomfortable. She was still adjusting to the change in ranks, not used to Jason being alpha. As such, it was a lot easier to be formal and distant than it was to pretend like everything was the same.
Aiden, on the hand, was an oblivious little human baby (though she had yet to know that's what he was). Scribbling happily with the red crayon, he beamed up at Jason and showed off what kind of looked like it might have been a wolf. "I make big goggy!"

Yes, everyone was still adjusting to the changes, Jason included. His own change in rank was, at times, overwhelming, but he didn't want anyone knowing that, of course. He would figure things out just like everyone else would.
"Jason is fine, Jess." He sounded offhanded and smiled at her lightly. Thing were just going to be weird with everyone for a while, he figured. Jess, with her police training, would probably be more formal and business-like. It wasn't a surprise.
J's attention turned back to Aiden at his answer and he couldn't help but to chuckle. "And what a great doggy it is. You're a talented little artist." He let one hand gently cup the boy's head affectionately before wandering to the counter and sitting heavily in one of the chairs. "What are you mixing there?" J was definitely a fan of Jess's baking.

"Sorry." The apology was insincere at best. Chances were she'd be calling him sir for the next few months at least. Unlike most of her pack mates, Jess had been bitten and she clung to her human ways of thinking something fierce. It was much easier for her to think of the pack restructuring as if the police department had gotten a new Chief. And, until she got used to the changes in power, she fully intended to stick to formalities.
Unfortunately, respect was the last thing on her mind as she watched Jason pet her son. Agitation ran through her veins like ice, teeth clenching as she stirred the batter. Though Aiden was happy enough with the attention, his mother was over protective and liked people getting close to her son about as much as she liked people getting close to herself, which was not at all. At least Aiden was completely oblivious to any sort of tension in the air, happily returning to his scribbles? "Nothing special, just some chocolate chip cookies." She was trying so hard not to growl.

Jason had been married to Amelia for a long time. Even though his wife has been dead for over fifty years now, he still remembers exactly what that look on Jess's face means. He did something wrong. He just sat there for a moment, both hands scrubbing roughly over his face, trying to hash it out. Did he say something wrong? He didn't think so, but then, Jess could be rather touchy, at times, more so than any female he's encountered before. All he's said, so far, was hi. How could that have touched a nerve?
Maybe it was interacting with her son? Jason couldn't help himself there. The big guy loved kids. He just couldn't ignore one that was in the same room as him. It was beyond his control. And Jess knew that he didn't mean any harm, right? If anyone in the pack didn't at least know him that well by now....well, he would never say anything...but that kind of hurt.
"Did I do something wrong?" Because he might be Alpha but he was still just a man and, as dumb as that question was to ask, he really did want to know.
