The woman's words actually made the child's cheeks flush a bit. Finally a small smile spread across the girl's face as she whispered, "Thank you," in response to the woman's compliment.
Her eyes lit up a bit at the mention of gum and the child's bright blue eyes flickered to Jason. That same light smile stayed on her face as the child watched the alpha produce the package of gum then as he slowly slid a stick out of the pack and reached out a large hand to give it to the girl. It took a moment but the little girl reached out, cautiously, and took the offered gum, thanking J before popping it in her mouth.
Was she hungry? It seemed that Everleigh was always hungry. She really was too small to adequately hunt for herself. Sure, she could snag a rabbit or small fox occasionally but now that it was winter and many animals hibernated, well, options and opportunities were low. Anything that someone else could do to help the child would be appreciated. A genuine smile touched the kid's lips and her eyes flickered to J as he slowly stood. Ever's eyes remained on him until he disappeared into the trees and was gone. After he was actually gone was when Everleigh seemed to visibly relax that much more. Yes, Ever recognized J's scent as that of the person who had been dropping food around for her but this was technically the first time that they met. Ever was feeling a bit awkward and intimidated.
Slowly, the child uncurled herself a bit from the ball she was curled up in and stretched her legs out in front of her. Now it was more than obvious just how small the girl was. Her legs were almost twig-like and her arms were the same. It was clear that the girl wasn't just naturally small. It was more than that. It was neglect catching up to her.

Connie smiled when the girl spoke again, thanking her for Connie's compliment on her name. Connie was starting to relax some, and her smile felt more real than it had before. Connie also felt relieved when Ever slowly reached out and took the piece of gum from Jason, giving him a soft thank you before she popped it into her mouth and leaned back.
However, when Jason looked at her after her suggesting, kindly she thought, that he go get food for Everleigh, she wanted to wince.
She turned to look at him, and her smile turned a little sheepish as he raised an eyebrow at her. I could have done that a bit better. She decided, but as Jason got up and said he would go find food, she relaxed a bit more. She didn't think Jason would be mad at her, but still. She was so worried about Ever that she didn't think to be tactful with her new alpha.
As Ever and Connie watched Jason go, Ever seemed to relax, especially when Jason was out of sight. Connie turned back to Everleigh as the girl uncurled from the rock, and Connie had to force herself not to react when she saw her stick-thin limbs.
"He's really sweet," She said conversationally. "But he's a big guy." She turned back from watching the forest where Jason had gone, hiding her golden eyes from Ever, and smiled at the girl. Her eyes were her normal brown now. "He can be a little intimidating sometimes, but he wouldn't do anything to hurt anymore." She scooted so she could lean up against part of the cave wall, and not unintentionally blocking more of the wind from going into the cave. She reclined against the rocky wall, and turned back to smile at Everleigh again.
"So what's your favorite candy?" She asked curiously. If she couldn't talk Ever into coming home with her today, maybe she'd bring the girl her favorite candy for awhile. Maybe it could help. "I like chocolate myself. Kit Kats are the best."

Yes, Jason certainly was big, especially to someone as tiny as Everleigh. And he definitely was intimidating. The little girl has seen Jason around a lot and has always picked up the strong scent of the pack from the man. Obviously, he was pack but the child still didn't know much more about him than that. "Who is he, though?" And why did he bother to check on her so much and worry so much about what happened to her? If Everleigh only knew that J was the alpha, the little girl would have had a heart attack for sure. The man was huge and knowing that he was the man in charge of the territory she was living on and that he was responsible for the decision for her to stay or go would really make her nervous.
Everleigh couldn't help watching Connie's every move as she sat back against the wall of the cave. The woman seemed to be relaxed, though and after a few moments, Everleigh started to relax a bit more as well. And engaging the girl in conversation, especially about candy was a good move, too. Children were so easily distracted and those distractions did help with nerves. "I like suckers....I mean, lollipops." Ever liked anything like that. "Chocolate is good, too...but just the dark kind." Which was hard to find and didn't usually come in easy to snag pieces. Lollipops were easy enough to pilfer, though.

Connie sat, pondering what to do. The girl wanted to know who Jason was, but Connie had a feeling the child would panic if she found out he was the pack Alpha. He smelled of pack and all the wolves that were in the pack, but should she tell Ever he wasn't only a member of the pack, but the leader of it? She didn't think so. So how to get around that without outright lying to the child? This wasn't going to be easy. Connie couldn't see any real way around it.
"He's a good man," She said, head tilted slightly as she wondered what else she could say. She couldn't just leave it there. "He's kind and caring, and worries about everyone." She smiled faintly. "That's why he's been bringing you food," She said gently. "Because he's worried about your health and safety staying out here." She turned, looking at Ever again and gave her a smile. "But he won't force you to do anything you don't want to do." She felt a pang of guilt for not saying he was the alpha, but she didn't want the child to panic. There would be time to explain alpha doesn't always mean dominating. Right now, Connie had to get her to open up before she could convince her to trust them.
"Mhmm, I love suckers." Connie smiled. "I prefer milk chocolate myself, the dark stuff is too bitter for me." She shrugged. Now that she knew something of what Ever liked, she could bring her out something if Ever didn't come back with them today. She didn't think Everleigh would stay at the pack house, but Connie had a spare room, and maybe staying with another female would help her relax some more.
"Are you cold out here? This snow makes everything feel colder, doesn't it?" Connie smiled. The jacket the girl wore was several sizes too big, and looked like a mans jacket. It didn't look that thick either. If she was cold, Connie would give the girl her coat. She had several more, and wouldn't miss this one. Besides, the coat was long, brushing the tops of her ankles. Everleigh could use it like a blanket if nothing else.

It was clear from Connie's description of Jason that the woman obviously had some kind of attachment or feelings for the man. Ever wanted to ask if they were a couple but the child thought that just might be too forward and really, none of her business anyway. The little girl was still watching Connie's every movement but was visibly relaxing with each passing moment. This lady really was very nice and easy to talk to. "He seems nice." That, the girl had to agree with. It was a rare thing for some stranger to take such a personal interest in someone else's wellbeing but then, Ever was just a little girl. She supposed that had a lot to do with it. "His scent is around here all the time. But...I don't mind." Now, having talked to Connie and knowing J's name, the fact that J was around so much didn't seem as scary. At least she now knew that the man was only looking out for her and wasn't some creepy stalker or something. Ever's life was scary enough as it was.
"Regular chocolate tastes kind of like wax, to me." But then the girl chuckled lightly at her own words. "I mean...its not like I know what wax tastes like, or anything, though." That slight blush had returned to her cheeks. "The only candy I really don't like is sour stuff and gummy stuff." And she wrinkled her little nose for emphasis, scrunching her features and making an "ew" face.
Everleigh pulled Sam's jacket tight around herself at Connie's question. "It's not so bad." Yeah, it was, actually. Even with her elevated body temperature and Sam's coat, it really did get chilly out there sometimes. "I can just move back more into the cave." But there would always be that draft from the open mouth of the cave itself. The little girl never did really get completely comfortable. Not only was there a draft but sleeping on the hard earth and leaning against a rock wasn't the most comfortable sleeping conditions, especially in human form. In wolf form, it was no big deal. Her animal form was supposed to be sleeping in those kinds of conditions but little girls weren't. Everleigh was, first and foremost, a little girl. "I can sleep in my wolf form, anyway." Which wasn't completely true. Ever was a bitten wolf and could only phase with the moon cycles since she was only bitten less than two years prior. It wasn't like she had enough control to manage her shift but she didn't want this nice lady worrying about her so she just left that part out.

Connie watched Ever carefully out of the corner of her eye, wondering what the girl would make of the information she had given her about Jason. Finally, she said she didn't mind, and Connie felt herself relax, a little ball of tension she hadn't realized was there until it had faded. "I'm glad you don't mind," Connie said as she relaxed a little more. "He doesn't want to scare you." She smiled as she glanced towards where Jason had gone. She wondered if he had gone into town to find food, or if he was going to shift and hunt something down.
Connie smiled when Everleigh said that normal chocolate tasted like wax, then was charmed when the girl blushed prettily at her own comment. "I don't mind it," She said with a smile, politely ignoring her blushing. "But I like really sweet candy. Or something minty. But not chocolate mints." Her nose wrinkled in an 'ew' face that matched Ever's. "That combination should never have been invented."
Connie turned when Ever said it was okay, but she heard a ring of the lie in her voice, and she figured she didn't want Connie to worry or insist that she come back with her to town. She wondered what the girl had been through if she had to lie about how cold the cave got. Her eyes softened, and slowly she stood up, unbuttoning her coat.
"Here," She said, stripping it off and holding it out. The air was colder now that she didn't have her coat, but she was wearing a thick sweater, and wouldn't freeze. If the girl had lived out here for six months, Connie could stand the cold for a little bit. "If I can't convince you to come back with me, I'd like you to have this. It'll be too long for you to wear, but you could use it like a blanket. It's nice and warm." She settled back down, not wanting to scare her, but still held out the coat. She would leave it here if she needed to, she wasn't going to take no for an answer. Jason was bringing her food. The least Connie could do was give her something to keep her warm if Ever wouldn't come back with her. She didn't think she would, not yet, but some things have surprised her in the past. In the back of her head, though, a soft voice begged Ever to come home with her so Connie could keep her safe.

Everleigh just couldn't help but to laugh at Connie's comment and the face she made. "Yeah, minty chocolate is kind of gross. And the ice cream is kind of ew, too." Cold, minty, green ice cream. There was something about that that just struck the child as being very wrong. Ever's attention went to the mouth of the cave when Connie's did. The little girl was also wondering when J would come back and this kind of surprised her. It must have been Connie's affectionate words that piqued her interest in the man. Now that Everleigh understood J's motives and motivations, she really wanted to get to know him better...at least a little bit. The child was definitely all about baby steps, especially when it came to strangers.
The woman slowly stood and for a moment the child was confused as she watched her take off her long coat. When Connie held it out to Everleigh, the little girl couldn't help but to blink in shock. "You'll freeze." And Ever should know all about freezing. She did it every single day. Not that she would ever admit it but the child knew how cold it could get out here. The last thing she wanted was for Connie to get sick because Everleigh took her coat. The girl would never, ever forgive herself for that. "Besides, this coat is warm and its big and...it helps. It does." Now she didn't know who she was trying to convince but she didn't think she was doing a very good job. It looked as though Connie was going to insist.
After a few awkward moments, the little girl slowly started to reach for the coat but stopped when Connie mentioned trying to convince Everleigh to come back with her tonight. "But I live here." And she knew full well that she probably shouldn't. It wasn't lost on the child that living how she did wasn't good for her but neither was the thought of a ton of strangers around her, staring at her, asking her questions, watching her like a hawk. No way. Not happening.
Thank goodness they were interrupted by the sounds of footsteps coming back towards the cave. And judging from the smell of cooked meat and grease, J had gone the human food route, probably anticipating that the child wouldn't want to eat raw meat in human form. He'd be right about that one.

Connie grinned at the girl's comment about minty ice cream. "It is really gross," She agreed. While she liked mints, chocolate, and ice cream, she didn't like them combined. She made the 'ew' face again without realizing it, then laughed at herself when she realized she'd made the face again.
As she relaxed back down, the coat held between Connie and Ever like a guilty secret, Connie's good humor died away as the girl looked confused, and stated that Connie would freeze. "I'll be okay," She said with a shake of her head. "The perks of being a werewolf mean I can't get sick." She smiled at Ever. "Plus, I don't get cold easily. And that coat probably does help a lot, but it can't keep all of you covered like this one will." She shrugged. "Plus I have more coats just like this one. You need it, not me." She smiled, but the smile faded as Ever told her that she lived there in the cave. Worry filtered in, and Connie's arm dropped some as she looked at the girl. She really had no where else to go. "You don't need to," She said, gently, but didn't say anything else as she heard footsteps crunching in the snow on the way to the cave.
She glanced up and saw Jason, and smelled the food he had brought. She was glad he had brought human food instead of a raw dead rabbit. While rabbit was tasty in either form, it would be hard to cook it and she didn't want Ever to eat it raw in her human form.
"That smells good," Connie said, laying her wool coat down gently in front of Ever before she climbed to her feet to meet Jason. She stood in her thick sweater and jeans, smiling as she waited for Jason to reach them. "Good thing you didn't go hunting, raw rabbit doesn't sound very tasty, does it Everleigh?" Connie made the 'ew' face again, hoping to make the child laugh.

Well, it would seem that Jason had perfect timing. From the sounds of it, the girls were bonding a bit. And he was just in time to learn some important info about the little girl. Nowhere else to go, huh? Well, if J was a bit more pushy he would insist that the little girl go with Connie, if not to the pack house then to Connie's own home. He wouldn't do that, though. Not yet, anyway.
He let the worry drop from his face by the time he was in sight of the two other wolves. He eyed Connie up and down a bit, worried for her now that she didn't have her long jacket but didn't let this register on his face for the child's benefit. Connie was right, the child needed that jacket more than Connie, as much as it bothered J to think that way. "Well, that's exactly what I thought, too." And he gave the little girl a playful wink and a smile before the expression melted and he eyed Connie's coat laying over the rock in front of Everleigh. Jason crouched down to her level with a kind but serious expression on his face, nodding at the coat before his eyes flickered up to catch the child's attention. "You should put that on, Everleigh. Connie's right. Its too cold for you without it." That was definitely not a request but he was trying to be gentle about it. Still, his firm tone told the girl she needed to listen and obey anyway.
The gentle smile returned to his face as he slowly reached out the bag of food to the child then sat back on the ground, crossing his legs casually. "So, did I miss anything exciting?"

As Connie watched Jason come close, she caught his quick look at her, and thought she saw worry for a moment before it was hidden. Why was he worried? Confused, she settled back down as Jason knelt in front of Ever, telling her to put on the coat though his command was gentle. Connie smiled, feeling much more relaxed when Everleigh put her new coat on, and if Connie had any misgivings about giving up that coat, they vanished as soon as Ever pulled it on. She sighed with a soft relief.
Ever didn't waste time in opening the bag and pulling out a burger, biting into it almost as soon as she had the wrapping off of the burger. Connie felt another weight of worry drop off as the girl had some real food, instead of the candy she was sure was the only thing the girl could easily snatch from the store.
Connie was glad that the bag looked stuffed of the burgers, and she felt her own middle clutch with hunger. It didn't growl though, and for that she was grateful. She wouldn't have taken one of those burgers even if Ever had dropped it into her lap, but the girl not knowing she was hungry would make her feel better. Besides, when they left here, Connie would get Jason to come with her to find some food for themselves. They could discuss getting Ever out of the cave and somewhere safer while they ate.
"Yeah, minty chocolatey ice-cream is nasty." Connie smiled and winked at Ever as she turned to look at Jason, who had sat next to her. She could feel his warmth and was glad he had sat next to her. Even though she didn't get cold easily, the air was sharp with the cold today, and the wind didn't help much. "Or just minty chocolate. Either way, it's a horrid combination."

"Oh, I would definitely have to agree with you both there. But you know what?" His eyes flickered to Everleigh and he leaned forward slightly, his voice a loud stage-whisper. "I don't really like candy or sugar that much." And he gave his own statement a playfully horrified gasp before chuckling. "I know. I'm one of those weirdo grown ups." But he was still grinning.
It made Jason feel better to see the child in Connie's long coat, as well but he was also still worried about Connie. Casually, Jason shifted himself so he was slightly behind Connie, leaning one side of his body against her back, hoping that the body heat would keep her warmer. He couldn't help that his attention remained on the child, though, for the most part. She was so tiny and fragile looking. Seeing how she devoured the burger sent a pang to his heart but he was determined to keep things as light as possible. "So how did you ever find this place, Everleigh? I have to say, I've been coming and going from this lake for decades and have never found this little hide out. You must have a good eye." His tone was matter-of-fact and conversational. He didn't want the poor little girl to think he was grilling her, even though he was.

Connie smiled when Ever turned a bright pink and asked if they were hungry. "I'm fine," She said, shaking her head. "Don't worry about me, Everleigh." She never came out and said, no she wasn't hungry. She had no idea how good the child was at detecting lies.
"Oh, I would definitely have to agree with you both there. But you know what? I don't really like candy or sugar that much. I know. I'm one of those weirdo grown ups."
Connie grinned at Ever's shocked face at Jason's comment, and found herself highly amused despite the situation. She wasn't surprised really, he didn't seem the type to like candy that much. But still, it was funny watching Ever's reaction. Connie glanced back at Jason as he shifted so he was casually leaning into her, and she felt relief when his body heat was shared with her. She smiled at him a little shyly before she turned back to Everleigh, who asked if she was sure she wasn't cold.
"I'm fine," She said with a laugh. "Even if I did get cold, Jason here is better than a space heater." She smiled and shrugged. "I'm more worried about you, Everleigh. It's so cold outside. Are you sure you're okay out here?" Connie's brows knit together in worry as she glanced around her at the snow. It was a couple feet deep in places, maybe more in others. She wished she could convince Everleigh to come back with her, and had to try again. Leaving the girl here only worried Connie more now that she didn't have her jacket. If it was cold out here for her, how bad was it for such a thin child? The thought made her worry grow.
